Members of ARTH 488A have been invited to contribute a short bio about themselves, indicating a bit about who they are and why they are interested in ancient portraits.
Emily Egan
Emily Egan is Assistant Professor of Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Art and Archaeology in the Department of Art History and Archaeology, and the instructor of record for the ARTH 488A course. As a student, Emily became interested in ancient portraits after being told that they "didn't exist" in the art of the Greek Bronze Age. Naturally, she set out to prove the nay-sayer wrong, and has been hooked ever since.
Quint Gregory
Quint Gregory is the Director of the Michelle Smith Collaboratory in the Department of Art History and Archaeology and is responsible for providing the platform for these ARTH 488A portrait basket contributions.
Edward Borders
Edward Borders is a senior studying Classics and Computer Science. He mainly studies the ancient world through the lens of language, but he also has a particular interest in Ancient Egyptian and Roman history and culture, especially when represented through art.
Nina Cardillo
Nina is a junior studying Art History and Communication. She has already enjoyed learned about anceint Greece and Rome and enjoyed how this class gave her more knowledge about some of the art from there as well as Egypt. She hopes to work in art museums in external affairs, community engagement, or special programs.
Jonathan Clark
Jonathan Clark is a senior studying Classics and Lingusitics with a minor in Archaeology. His primary approach to the ancient world has been philological, but he has become increasingly interested in material culture and ancient art history.
Lauren Kershenbaum
Lauren Kershenbaum is a junior studying Studio Art and Art History. Her studies in art history have mainly been focused on modern and contemporary art; studying ancient portraiture this past semester has given her a new perspective through which to view the study of art.
Isabella Laurel
Isabella is a senior studying Graphic Design. Her interest in ancient portraiture comes from her travels to Italy and Greece. She enjoys the knowledge gained from taking this class.
Ryan Milley
Ryan Milley is studying to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Politics. He is also minoring in Classical Mythology and Law and Society. Ryan's studies in classics has been focused mainly on mythology and architecture. However, he has also been very interested in ancient sculpture due to his travels in Europe.
Anna Nielsen
Anna is a graduating senior studying Art History. Her studies have been a broad array of time periods but her main interests are early American art and Greek art. Her love for ancient art grew on a winter class trip to Italy. She plans to use her degree in museums where she can continue learning, teaching others as well as pursuing a career in Collections Management.
Christopher Peppe
Mark Weadon
Mark Weadon is a recent classics graduate from the University of Maryland (M.A. 2017). While Mark's previous studies of classical culture have focused mainly on philology, he became interested in the material culture of the Mediterranean while traversing ancient sites and touring many archaeological museums while on travel.
